What is AI detection, the human way?

Some photos look real at first glance, but fall apart in the details. This guide teaches a step-by-step method to spot common AI mistakes with your own eyes.

Start with the free mini guide, then go deeper with the upcoming book How to Spot AI Images.

TEXT FAIL: distorted letters

Close-up of a cap logo with distorted letters (AI text artifact).

LOGIC FAIL: extra button

Close-up of a shirt showing an extra button (AI artifact).

The two methods

Method 1: Image analysis
Check anatomy, lighting, texture, edges, and reflections. These small visual clues often reveal AI when you know what to look for.

Method 2: Context Analysis
Verify the source: reverse image search, profile history, metadata, and inconsistencies in the story. Context is where many fakes collapse.

Meet the Author

For as long as I can remember, images have fascinated me. As a teenager, I started exploring image editing, and I’ve followed the evolution of visual technology ever since.

Before this project, I ran a business focused on digital restoration of vintage photos and the digitization of film, slides, and physical prints. That work trained my eye to spot tiny inconsistencies, the kind you only notice when you zoom in and look closely.

Detect AI Images grew out of that same curiosity, and one simple question: how do we stay confident in a world where photos can be fake, yet look real at first glance?

My goal is to help you spot AI-generated images and deepfakes using practical, human checks, so you can trust what you see a little more.

Thanks for reading,
Jacob

FAQ

Where can I find an AI detector for free?

If you’re looking for a free AI image detector, start here. This site teaches you how to spot AI-generated images the human way. Get the free mini guide (PDF) for quick visual checks to spot AI-generated portraits, no tools required.

How can I tell if a photo is AI-generated?

To tell if a photo is AI generated, zoom in and check details that should be consistent in real life: jewelry, eyes, hairlines, edges, repeated elements, and text. AI generated photos often look real at first glance, but break down in small details.

Are AI image detectors accurate?

AI image detection software can help, but accuracy varies by tool, image type, and processing (compression, screenshots, edits). Some detectors produce false positives or false negatives. The most reliable approach is combining an AI image detector tool with manual verification checks.

Why do AI detectors disagree or give different results?

Detectors disagree because they look for different signals and are trained on different data. Compression, resizing, screenshots, and edits can also change the result.

How do I detect AI images without a tool?

To detect AI images without a tool, use manual checks: zoom in, test logic (does it make sense), consistency (repeated details), and materials (metal, fabric, glass). This human AI detector approach works well when AI images look real at first glance but break down in the details.
